Sustainable Business Program

Save resources, money and the environment through these programs facilitated by Council's Economic Development Unit.

Energy Efficiency Program

Build an energy efficient business by installing energy efficient equipment and get 50% off implementation costs of up to $5,000.

Eligible Businesses

If your business spends up to about $20,000 in electricity a year or employs up to approximately 10 full time staff, you are eligible to join the Energy Efficiency for Small Business Program.

What you get

Businesses get up to four hours free support to coordinate installation. Assistance is provided to get quotes, oversee work and complete paperwork, freeing up your time to focus on your business. So, if you are thinking about upgrading equipment such as lighting, air conditioning, hot water, insulation or commercial refrigeration, you will only have to contribute half the cost towards your energy efficiency improvements.

Water Efficiency Program

Sydney Water together with the City of Canada Bay and Leichhardt Council are helping small to medium sized businesses save water and money. We are delivering free water use assessments to improve your business water efficiency and cut costs. Sustainable Business Officers can also help you cut waste, save on energy and access energy efficient rebates. The Green Business Toolkit provides additional information on programs available.

Eligible Businesses

Businesses which use between 5,000 and 80,000 litres of water per day are eligible to register for this program. Check your water bill, if it is more than $2,500 per quarter then this program will be of great benefit for you in saving water and money.

What do businesses receive?

  • a free water use assessment of your business. These assessments outline the most cost effective options to boost water efficiency in your business
  • assistance in implementing the recommendations of your water assessments: we will help you find the trades people or you can use your own
  • ongoing advice, access to the latest technologies in your industry and assistance with funding retrofits.

What is the process?

  • a Sustainable Business Officer will contact you before attaching a data logger to your Sydney Water Main meter for a one week period to monitor water use
  • remove the logger and analyse the data (you will be contacted again only if we require access to the meter)
  • meet with you to discuss the water monitoring data and undertake a walk-through water assessment. The assessment will involve a survey of all water using fixtures and fitting as well as brief discussions with management and staff to understand your water using practices. The assessment should take 1-2 hours. You do not need to be present for the whole assessment, however it would be helpful to if you or other staff members are available at the conclusion of the assessment to provide further details if needed
  • prepare a report that includes any recommendations to improve efficiency in cost effective way
  • discuss the report with you and agree which items will be implemented to achieve the saving identified
  • provide a rebate form to claim your financial rebate after implementing water saving measures.
