Car sharing on the rise in Canada Bay

| 25 May 2017

The new car sharing spaces will increase the number of car share vehicles in the Canada Bay Council area to 24, all of which are currently being operated by GoGet to service more than 1,250 local car share members. “We see car sharing as a complement to public transport, allowing our residents and local business easy and cost-effective access to private transport for trips around the area,” City of Canada Bay Mayor Helen McCaffrey said. According to GoGet, a single carshare vehicle can replace up to 12 private vehicles. “More residents using these pods means fewer private vehicles on our roads, and fewer cars in the area leads to more free parking spaces, less congestion and a greener City.” As part of the City of Canada Bay’s commitment to encouraging better, sustainable transport solutions, some recent developments have had to meet Development Application consent conditions requiring the provision of car share spaces within new developments. Car sharing is a form of car rental where companies such as GoGet own and maintain a fleet of vehicles located in convenient designated parking spots or areas and available for short term rental, charged by time and distance. There are other alternate schemes allowing cars to be shared such as CarNextDoor where local residents are able to rent their personal vehicles to other drivers when not in use.
