“I am pleased to announce work is commencing on establishing a Memorandum of Understanding between The Kokoda Initiative and the City of Canada Bay.”
“This agreement acknowledges our shared World War II history, honours the close bonds that were forged with the legendary Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels by our servicemen and women, and ensures our ongoing association with the peoples who live and work along the Kokoda Trail today.”
The Kokoda Initiative, which was set up to sustainably develop and protect the Kokoda Track and the surrounding Owen Stanley Ranges, falls under the jurisdiction of the Papua New Guinean Minister for the Environment, Conservation and Climate Change.
“This agreement will enable citizens of both parties to endeavour to promote goodwill and understanding, and develop beneficial cultural, health, education and social exchanges for our mutual prosperity,” Mayor Tsirekas said.
The City of Canada Bay is home to the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway, a living memorial and a principal site of commemoration honouring all those who fought for Australia during World War II, with a focus on the sacrifices made during battles which took place in 1942-43 along the Kokoda Trail.
“I am pleased to be walking my 5th Kokoda trek coinciding with this year’s ANZAC Day, and I believe our affiliation with The Kokoda Initiative will greatly contribute to and strengthen the already existing friendship between Australia, Papua New Guinea, and our local community.”
