Superheroes protecting Canada Bay

| 26 June 2017

The Matron and her dog Thermo, Fairywren, Da Klaw and Silverye, who are tasked with assignments such as investigating toxic sludge threatening wildlife in local wetlands and to fighting crime, have found a home at the City’s libraries as they wait to be unleashed.

Council held a competition to design what a City of Canada Bay Comic Hero would look like for this year’s Comic Con-versation – a celebration of comic culture with events, exhibitions and talks across Sydney libraries from July 10 to 16. The community was also invited to provide input on the qualities and appearance of their ideal heroes.

Four designs have been chosen and can be found on footpath stickers and bookmarks at Concord and Five Dock libraries and The Learning Space at The Connection, Rhodes.

City of Canada Bay is also running a number of events during Comic Con-versation including Manga drawing workshops, a video special effects masterclass, heroic heroes and dastardly villains drawing for children and an exhibition of works by graphic designer and illustrator, Matthew Lin.

Heroes revealed

Lillian is a young girl who found an injured wren, while walking along Cooks Avenue, Concord. She named it Fairywren. After caring for Fairywren for two weeks the wren passed away. Lillian was so sad she began to cry. Suddenly the soul of Fairywren rose from its body and stood in front of her. Lillian, amazed by what she was seeing, she reached out and the Fairywren’s soul splinter into pieces and gravitated towards Lillian’s body. Lillian found she had new bird like abilities calling herself Super Fairywren and uses her powers to protect City of Canada Bay from any threat no matter how big or small.

Jorge became Da Klaw after an unfortunate accident with some uranium infected Blue Swimmer crabs on Burwood Road. Like most 20 somethings, he was listening to his music and didn’t see the out of control truck heading his way. Quick reflexes by an old Chinese lady doing Tai Chi pushed him out of the way but it wasn’t enough to stop him from swallowing 15 crabs that fell out of the truck. It wasn’t until that afternoon Jorge’s new powers started to manifest. Jorge now dedicates himself to fighting crime and being a damn fine Dungeons and Dragons Master. Jorge has the ability to turn his arms into giant crab claws at will, meaning he can still do origami and prune the hedges at the same time. When he’s not battling criminals and bad DJs on the decks, Jorge spends his time writing rhymes and mixing sic phat beats, hence calling himself, Da Klaw.

The Matron is accompanied by her ever-faithful companion Thermo. By day she is a nurse but by night - with the help of Thermo’s super sensitive powers - she detects all manner of social and environmental ills, using her super healing powers to correct them. Thermo’s power pack not only helps them fly, it contains the magical instruments needed for healing. Nurses like the Matron are true unsung heroes of our community with the real life super power to heal.

Called to investigate reports of toxic sludge threatening wildlife in the local wetlands, Ranger Liz discovered the ooze leaking from a strange, extra-terrestrial capsule. After being exposed in her attempt to rescue birdlife trapped in the discharge, Liz began to exhibit superhuman qualities. With the power of flight and the ability to scramble others’ thoughts with her song-like shrieks she adopted the name and appearance of the silvereye bird, and took to the streets employing her newfound powers in the fight against crime.
