Community backs public libraries

| 18 March 2015

“Our community has taken the time to educate themselves about the issue and sign postcards to help us seek fairer funding for our libraries,” he said.

“We joined the NSW Public Library Association (NSWPLA) campaign for fairer funding from State Government last year. Since December, library visitors to Concord and Five Dock libraries have had the opportunity to show their support for their local library by signing a postcard addressed to our State MP.”

“I am pleased to announce we have sent over 700 signed postcards from Concord and Five Dock Library visitors since December.”

“The message here is simple. We need the financial support from State Government in maintaining library services. Without this support, services will be jeopardised, and our community will suffer,” Mayor Tsirekas said.

“Our libraries have over 47, 000 members, attract over 330,000 visits each year and lend over 470,000 items; as well as provide valuable online resources.”

“The City of Canada Bay has invested significantly in our library services over the past decade, spending more than $1.27 million in capital expenditure and $2.4 million annually to provide valuable library services to our community.”

City of Canada Bay Libraries have been running social media campaign asking library visitors to write what they like about their library and posting it on Facebook. A video highlighting some of these pictures can be found on Youtube: .

The community is still being urged to show their support by sharing what they like about the Library on social media using #libraryloversnsw and tagging @canbaylibraries.

The Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG, who grew up in North Strathfield, has shown his support for public libraries by writing a heartfelt statement describing his experience and love for his local library and the role it has played throughout his life.
