Becoming an Educator

If you:

  • Enjoy working with children and supporting their play, learning and development
  • Have some experience caring for children
  • Would like to operate your own business from home
  • Are available at least two days a week for at least 7 hours each day
  • Would like the opportunity to look after your own child or children while working
  • Would like to be part of a team of local childcare providers.

What do I need to do to become a Family Day Care Educator?

  • Have a current First Aid Certificate or be willing to obtain one
  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Attend initial and ongoing training through the Coordination Unit
  • Complete the registration process including completing an application form, an interview and home assessment, referee checks and Working with Children Check
  • Meet the requirements of NSW Children's Services Regulation 2004 and City of Canada Bay Service Policies and Practices
  • Implement and model quality practices and principles outlined by Quality Improvement and Accreditation System
  • Be committed to continuing Quality Improvement.

What about income?

  • Family Day Care can be both financially and personally rewarding earing up to $1,687.50 per week or $87,750.00 per annum
  • You can work full time or part time
  • You can care for up to five children under school age (including your own)
  • You can care for children before and after school
  • You can set your own fees
  • As a self employed small business operator, you are able to claim many of your expenses on tax.

Support for Educators

The Coordination Unit provides ongoing support to registered Educators including:

  • Regular home visits
  • Access to Play Session, including transport if required
  • Access to Toy and Resource Library
  • Family Day Care Information Kit
  • Educator and staff meetings
  • Ongoing professional training
  • Administrative support
  • 24 hours, seven days a week on call emergency phone access
  • Placement of children
  • Observations of children and
  • Educator to Educator visits.

The Coordination Unit hours are Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 4.30pm.
