Community Safety
Council is committed to working in partnership with residents, police, community organisations, the business community, and state and federal governments to ensure the City of Canada Bay is a safe and welcoming place to live, work and visit.
Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan
The City of Canada Bay developed the Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan in 2007/08 in collaboration with the Burwood Local Area Police Command. The Plan was adopted by the NSW Attorney General as a Safer Community Compact in April 2009.
The objectives of the Plan are to:
- Lower crime in the area
- Consolidate crime prevention efforts within Council
- Improve coordination between Council, police and other key stakeholders
- Exchange ideas and explore opportunities for partnership projects
- Share resources resulting in cost efficiencies
- Inform the community and address perceptions and fear of crime.
While there are low levels of reported crime in the City of Canada Bay, maintaining a proactive focus on community safety and the prevention of crime is a key goal for Council. This includes continuing successful programs, and developing new programs, in partnership with others stakeholders, including the police, business community and broader community sector.
The Plan identifies the following priorities for the Local Government Area:
- Reduce malicious damage to property
- Prevent alcohol-related assaults
- Reduce steal from motor vehicle
- Prevent neighbourhood disputes
- Target crime hot spots
- Tackle negative perceptions of crime
- Provide effective governance for crime prevention.
Detailed strategies, both proactive and reactive, to address these priorities are contained in the Plan.

Graffiti Management
The City of Canada Bay's Graffiti Vandalism Management Strategy was adopted by Council on 18 August 2009. It identifies a number of reactive and proactive strategies.
The Graffiti Vandalism Management Strategy is closely aligned with Council's FuturesPlan20 and Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan and demonstrates the Council’s commitment to improving the appearance of the City, as well as improving perceptions of safety and community wellbeing.
The five key elements identified by this strategy are:
- Data Collection and Research
- Graffiti Removal and Maintenance - a free graffiti removal service offered by Council for private and commercial property within the local area.
- Crime Prevention Through Environment Design (CPTED) Strategies
- Community Education, Information & Support
- Public Art & Engagement Strategies.
Detailed strategies that address the key elements are contained in the Graffiti Vandalism Management Strategy.
