Crime Prevention and Community Safety
Council is committed to working in partnership with residents, police, community organisations, the business community, and state and federal governments to ensure Canada Bay is a safe and welcoming place to live, work and visit.
Crime Prevention Plan
Council developed the Crime Prevention Plan in 2007/08 in collaboration with the Burwood Local Area Police Command. The Plan was adopted by the NSW Attorney General as a Safer Community Compact in April 2009, which will enable Council to seek financial assistance from the NSW Attorney General's Department to help with the Plan's implementation.
The aim of the Plan is to:
- lower crime in the area;
- consolidate crime prevention efforts within Council;
- improve coordination between Council, police and other key stakeholders;
- exchange ideas and explore opportunities for partnership projects;
- share resources resulting in cost efficiencies; and
- inform the community and address perceptions and fear of crime.
Whilst there are low levels of reported crime in the City of Canada Bay, maintaining a proactive focus on the safety and prevention of crime is a key goal for Council. This includes continuing successful programs, and developing new programs, in partnership with others stakeholders, including the police, business community and broader community sector.
The Plan identifies the following priorities for the Local Government Area over the next three (3) years:
- Reduce malicious damage to property;
- Prevent alcohol-related assaults;
- Reduce steal from motor vehicle;
- Prevent neighbourhood disputes;
- Target crime hot spots;
- Tackle negative perceptions of crime; and
- Provide effective governance for crime prevention.
Detailed strategies, both proactive and reactive, to address these priorities are contained in the Plan.
