Meals on Wheels

Drummoyne Meals on Wheels provides food services to meet the needs of older people and people with disabilities and their carers within the local community.  The service delivers approximately 1,000 meal per month!  At the heart of the service is a large volunteer workforce who ensure that healthy, nutritious meals are delivered to clients.

Drummoyne Meals on Wheels is a service coordinated by the City of Canada Bay with funding support from Ageing, Disability and Home Care. Referrals to the service can be made by medical practitioners, hospital staff, social workers, home care workers and Aged Care Assessment teams.  Self-referrals are also accepted.  Prior to service being provided, each client is assessed according to individual needs.  Access to the service is subject to eligibility.

Drummoyne Meals on Wheels and OzHarvest Initiative

Drummoyne Meals on Wheels has developed a partnership with OzHarvest, a not-for-profit organisation that rescues food from restaurants, retailers, food outlets and corporate kitchens across Sydney, Canberra and Wollongong to feed communities at risk.

Excess food from Drummoyne Meals on Wheels becomes available after food orders are placed and elderly clients are not available to receive meals.  Clients often enter hospital at short notice, go into respite or attend medical appointments.  Most of the meals delivered are chilled and it is recommended that they are eaten within 48 hours.  In the past, the excess food would have been disposed of.

This excess food is now stored frozen and collected by OzHarvest on fortnightly basis.

The food donated by Drummoyne Meals on Wheels is then distributed by OzHarvest and eaten the same day by the homeless and those in need.
