MLAK
MLAK System implemented to assist People with a Disability in the City of Canada Bay
The City of Canada Bay Council has recently introduced the MLAK (Master Locksmith Access Key) system at three accessible toilets in the local area to increase access for people with a disability.
What is the MLAK system?
The MLAK system is an innovative scheme that uses a universal lock and key to allow people with disabilities 24 hours a day access to public facilities such as accessible toilets.
Why have an MLAK system?
Easy access to toilets is something that the general public often take for granted, whereas it is often difficult for a person with a physical disability to locate an accessible public toilet that is open of an evening. Other benefits include reducing vandalism and assisting to keep facilities clean.
Who can get an MLAK key?
Keys are available to people who have a mobility difficulty or who have written authority from a doctor, disability organisation or community health centre. These people can purchase their own key for approximately $15 from a Master Locksmith.
Where can I use the MLAK?
At accessible toilets located at:
- Rotary Park, Brays Bay Reserve, Concord Road at Rhodes and
- Quarantine Park, Spring Street in Abbotsford
- Ranger's Cottage, Blackwall Point Road, opposite the roundabout for Parkview Road, Chiswick.
People with a disability can purchase their own universal key from their local Master Locksmith for approximately $10.
Availability is restricted to people who have a mobility difficulty OR who have written authority from:
- a doctor
- a disability organisation
- a local council or community health centre or
- the centre managment or owner of a bulilding with a accessible toilet on site.
