Seniors Week
Seniors Week 2012
Seniors Week in the City of Canada Bay was celebrated throughout March and into April. Seniors Week Committee members put together a calendar of events full of variety that appealed to a diverse range of community members.
Harbour Cruise
The Harbour Cruise was as popular as ever. Close to 100 people attended and had an unplanned treat when spotting the Queen Mary 2 docked in Darling Harbour. Feedback from the Cruise was overwhelmingly popular and requests have been made for it to continue in 2013.

The Power to Change
To launch Seniors week this year there was a focus on Energy Efficiency. A small but enthusiastic group enjoyed an entertaining and informative evening. There was a speaker from The Council of the Aged (COTA) followed by a Council representative. Everyone who attended walked away with many tools to assist in saving money on their electricity bills and had the satisfaction of knowing that their actions would benefit the environment. Attendees were also made aware of the many programs offered by Council in the area of Sustainability.
Seniors Art Exhibition
A very popular new event this year was the Seniors Art Exhibition at Concord Library. The art class that runs from Concord Senior Citizens Centre exhibited their works throughout March. The works were very well received and many were sold. An afternoon tea was held and artists were on hand to discuss their paintings. This was a great way to showcase the talent of local seniors as well as alerting residents to the services offered by both Concord Library and Concord Senior Citizens Centre.
The Exhibition will now be shown at Five Dock Library. Pictured is a work by Robyn Pye Yaralla Wallflowers.
Sharing the Memories
This oral history project encouraged locals to get together and share anecdotes, stories and recollections about the City of Canada Bay area. Residents came along to a morning tea and enjoyed reminiscing with others with some of the histories recorded to be kept by the City of Canada Bay Museum. Sharing the memories was a joint project between the Museum and Concord Library with assistance from Drummoyne Community Centre who hosted one of the morning teas. The Museum is interested in collecting people’s memories all year round.
Computer Pals for Seniors Seminar – Family Histories
This year Computer Pals for Seniors focused on how to use a computer to complete a family history. This proved very popular with over forty people attending the event and providing positive feedback to organisers.

Concord Meals on Wheels annual Picnic
As popular as even the annual picnic attracted around 180 attendees. A change of venue this year to Concord Community Centre went well and organisers received praise for their efforts. There was much frivolity, dancing and laughter as attendees enjoyed their day.
Getting Active!
Five Dock Leisure Centre, Concord RSL Bowling Club and Strathfield Croquet Club all offered 'come and try' sessions throughout Seniors Week. This gave attendees the opportunity to try out a new activity and choose whether or not to continue beyond Seniors Week.
