Local Heritage Grants

Helping our community to preserve the charm and character of our local built heritage.

The Local Heritage Grants Program for 2023–24 is now closed as funds for this financial year have been exhausted due to the popularity of the program.

Subject to funding being available, we are looking forward to the Local Heritage Grants Program commencing again on 1 July 2024. Please return to this page close to this time as applications are typically accepted for projects completed within the previous 12 months.

Thanks for your interest in the program.

The City of Canada Bay operates a Local Heritage Grants Program to encourage conservation work. Dollar for dollar grants are available of up to $3,500 to owners of heritage items and up to $2,500 to owners of contributory buildings in conservation areas. For the 2023–24 financial year a total of $25,000 in funding is available.

Applications are only accepted for work that has been completed and paid for. In addition, a minor works application must have been approved for the works.

Applicants must:

  • Read the Local Heritage Grants Program Guidelines
  • Submit a completed application form
  • Provide a copy of the minor works approval letter
  • Provide a detailed description of the proposed works, and where relevant, sketches of work and plans
  • Provide before, during, and after works colour photographs
  • Provide evidence of costs (tax invoices).

To find out if your property is listed as a heritage item refer to Schedule 5 of the Canada Bay Local Environmental Plan of the Canada Bay Development Control Plan. You can also search the property details on Council's Property Enquiry tool.

To find out if your property is a contributory property in a heritage conservation area refer to Appendix 1 Canada Bay Development Control Plan.

The aims of the fund are to:

  • Encourage work to heritage items that will conserve and enhance the heritage significant aspects of the heritage item
  • Encourage work to contributory buildings in heritage conservation areas in order to enhance the contribution the place makes to the heritage values of the area
  • Help residents by assisting with the cost of conservation works
  • Encourage greater interest and awareness for conservation of heritage places within the City of Canada Bay
  • Promote a positive community attitude towards heritage conservation within the City of Canada Bay.
