Local Heritage Assistance Fund
Local Heritage Assistance Fund
Canada Bay Council operates a Local Heritage Assistance Fund to encourage conservation work to heritage items and contributory buildings in conservation areas. Dollar for dollar grants are available of up to $3,000 to owners of heritage items and up to $2,000 to owners of contributory buildings in conservation areas. For the 2009-2010 financial year, there is a total of $28,500 in funding to be distributed.
What Projects are Eligible for Funding?
To be eligible for funding the work must be undertaken on a heritage item or on a contributory building within a conservation area. To find out if your property is listed as a heritage item or a contributory building in a conservation area, refer to Schedule 5 of the Canada Bay Local Environmental Plan and Appendix B of the Canada Bay Development Control Plan.
The types of projects that will be given priority for funding assistance in the 2009-2010 financial year are:
- Reconstruction of original joinery elements such as windows, doors and verandah timberwork;
- External painting in an appropriate colour scheme; and
- Reinstatement of stained glass in association with reconstruction of a window or a doorcase.
The projects must be completed by 30 April 2010.
How Do I Apply?
Applications for funding assistance have closed for the 2009-2010 financial year. Applicants will be advised by early October if their application has been successful.

2008 Local Heritage Assistance Fund
In 2008 assistance funding was given to roof repairs and replacement with appropriate materials and repairs to degraded sandstone. High priority was given to roof repairs because leaks in a roof can cause damage to other parts of a building. Sandstone repairs are also given high priority because timely repointing and repair of stonework can avoid much more expensive replacement of stone in the future.
