Food Regulation Partnership

Both the NSW Food Authority and local government play significant roles in food regulation in NSW.  To provide NSW with the best food regulation system in Australia, a strong and genuine partnership between the NSW Food Authority and local government is essential.

The NSW Food Regulation Partnership is a project involving the NSW Food Authority and local councils that will further boost consumer food safety and enable authorities to respond more quickly to food emergencies and recalls.

The NSW Food Regulation Partnership has been designed to clearly define and appropriately resource local government’s role in food regulation.  The Partnership eliminates duplication and inefficient allocation of resources across NSW in the campaign against unsafe and incorrectly labelled food.

The City of Canada Bay has elected to take an active role in the Partnership by undertaking:

  • Emergency Response (Including Urgent Food Recalls);
  • Routine Inspections (Retail Businesses);
  • Investigation of Food Complaints (Retail Businesses); and
  • Enforcement Action (Retail Businesses).

Part of the Partnership includes the establishment of Regional Food Surveillance Network Groups, which are made up of Council Environmental Health Officers and NSW Food Authority representatives.

The City of Canada Bay’s Environmental Health Officers attend the Central Sydney Regional Food Surveillance Network Group meetings to discuss pertinent issues across Central Sydney Councils, receive updates on food regulation and participate in training sessions related to food safety.
