Food Safety Training

Food businesses have a responsibility to ensure that all food handling staff are adequately trained.  As part of Council's Food Safety Surveillance Strategy, Council assists businesses to fulfil training requirements by providing advice, facilitating and running food safety education programs.

Food handler training requirements can be categorised into three groups:

1.  Food Safety Supervisor (FSS) Training - New Requirement By Law
2.  Council's Food Safety Workshops - Attendance Required
3.  Other Training Opportunities - Participation Recommended.

A description of each category is provided below.  However, if further information is required, please contact Council's Environmental Health Team on 9911 6555, 8.30am to 10am, Monday to Friday.

FSS Food Authority

1. Food Safety Supervisor Training: Deadline 1 October 2011

New laws require certain food businesses to have at least one trained Food Safety Supervisor (FSS) by 1 October 2011.  Failure to comply can attract penalties of up to $600.  Council must be notified within seven days upon completion of the training, by lodging the FSS Notification Form.

2. Council's Food Safety Workshops - Attendance Required

Council regularly runs food safety workshops which are aimed at providing food businesses with the latest food safety information and discussion about recent inspections. It is expected that at least one representative from each food business attend each round of workshops.

No dates have been set for the next round of workshops, however details will be posted as soon as they are available.

I'm Alert  - Food Safety Program

3. I'm Alert Food Safety Training - Recommended

The City of Canada Bay is pleased to provide FREE and unlimited access to an exciting new on line Food Safety program.  The 'I'm Alert' program will assist food business managers ensure all staff are trained in food safety and hygiene, thereby reducing the risk of food borne illness resulting from poor food handling practices.

This program is interactive, easy to follow and entertaining.  The user is able to print an acknowledgement form and certificate upon completion that can be kept as a part of staff records.  It is recommended that all food handling staff take part in this FREE training opportunity.
