Noxious Weed Information
Noxious Weeds are plants that have been recognised by the NSW Government as having significant negative impacts on the environment, agriculture or human health. Council’s responsibilities in relation to noxious weed management are detailed under the NSW Noxious Weeds Act 1993.
In the Sydney Central Region, our remnant natural areas are under threat from noxious weeds being introduced and competing with native plants for light, space and soil moisture/nutrients. Many noxious weeds are escapees from urban gardens and backyards, spread by birds, wind, in storm-water and through people dumping garden refuse in our bushland reserves.
For an up-to-date list of plants declared noxious in the City of Canada Bay area visit the Department of Industry and Investment website and follow the prompts.
There are also many weeds that are not declared noxious, yet still pose significant risks to our natural areas. These plants are identified as Environmental Weeds by bushland managers and bushcare volunteers.
On the Council's forms and fact sheets page under Weeds Fact Sheets a number of useful fact sheets are available which look at various noxious weeds (declared weeds in the City of Canada Bay) and environmental weeds (plants which are weedy by nature), however, there is no legislation which applies to their removal. For detailed instructions on weed removal techniques read our Fact Sheet.
Further information on both noxious and environmental weeds (including videos and colour photos) can be found at the Sydney Weeds website.
