BagLess in the Bay

In February 2012 Council will launch 'Bagless in the Bay', a plastic bag reduction campaign, in the Wareemba shopping precinct.

This community initiative encourages you to take and use your own reusable bag when you go shopping.

Many Wareemba retailers already promote alternatives to single-use plastic bags. The BagLess campaign highlights and reinforces this sustainability message.

The campaign will be trialled in Wareemba for one month. Following evaluation, Bagless may be rolled out across more of the city's retail precincts.

Supporting the campaign is easy

Remember to take your own reusable bag. Put small items in an existing bag. Or, if available choose more sustainable alternatives to plastic, like paper or a asking for a box.

Throughout the trial, you'll see participating retailers in Wareemba displaying the campaign logo reminding you to ask yourself - do I really need that bag?

Why target plastic bags?

Single-use plastic bags have significant negative environmental impacts. Producing them is fossil-fuel resource intensive, and they can take up to 1000 years to break down, and many can't easily be recycled. Australians use almost one bag a day - 326 per person per year. That's a lot of plastic!

Taking your own bag is an easy step to take for a cleaner, more sustainable environment. Who knows, it might just be the first of many.
