Projects Around Your City
Moving Messages
Ten thought provoking environmental messages are now roaming our City. Environmental messages are displayed on the side and rear of some Council vehicles to capture your mind and encourage the community to think about their daily actions and the environment at the same time. Bookmarks featuring five of the inspiring environmental messages are also available to the community.
This project was developed by the City of Canada Bay Sustainable City Committee as part of Councils Sustaining the Environment Program.
Smart Irrigation and Lighting Management
The City of Canada Bay has recently installed a smart lighting and irrigation system, including a weather station. The smart system will save water by turning off sprinklers when it is raining. It will also save energy by switching off flood lighting when the sporting fields are closed and lights are not required.
For further information, please refer to our Weather Stations for Irrigation Project Fact Sheet.
Cintra Hockey Water Recycling Project
Council is recycling over 4 million litres of water each year at Cintra Hockey complex. Water that is used on the synthetic pitch is collected and treated and reused on the pitch to keep the playing surface safe.
For further information, please refer to our Cintra Hockey Water Recycling Project Fact Sheet.
Catchment to Cove - Stormwater and Biodiversity Initiative
To improve conditions for fragile ecosystems that exist along Sisters and Half Moon Bays in Drummoyne, Council has installed two Gross Pollutant Traps to collect over 8 tonnes of litter, leaves and sediment from stormwater each year reaching the shores and waterways of Iron Cove. The project included planting of over 2000 native plants in Brett Park.
For further information, please refer to our Catchment to Cove Fact Sheet.
Powells Creek Reserve Stormwater Harvesting
Council has implemented a stormwater harvesting project at Powells Creek Reserve. By collecting and treating the rainwater off the car park, Council can save millions of litres of drinking water each year by reusing this water for irrigation of the playing fields.
For further information, please refer to our Stormwater Harvesting for Reuse Project Fact Sheet.
Concord Oval Rainwater Reuse
A rainwater tank that can hold over 100,000 litres of water has been installed at Concord Oval to collect rainwater from one of the grandstands. This water is being used to irrigate the Oval and will save 2 million litres of drinking water each year.
For further information, please refer to our Concord Oval Rainwater Reuse Project Fact Sheet.
Projects Underway
Restoring Yaralla's Bushland
In conjunction with the Department of Health, Council is now embarking on the recovery the Yaralla Bushland, an important piece of Concord's natural heritage through a long-term restoration project. With the help of bushcare volunteers, Council will use bush regeneration techniques to trigger the site's natural resilience, biodiversity and the habitat value for local native fauna.
Prince Edward Park Saltmarsh Restoration
Council bush regeneration staff and bushcare volunteers have begun work on the conservation of a saltmarsh community in Prince Edward Park. The significant saltmarsh vegetation will be protected through weed control, planting out of a large area of previously grassed slope with native plants.
Water Mining for Irrigation
Planning and investigations are underway on an exciting project which will see the Council save up to 180 million litres of water each year. Council is looking to treat wastewater to a very high standard and use the recycled water to irrigate our many beautiful parks and golf courses.
For further information, please refer to our Water Mining for Irrigation of Canada Bay Parks and Golf Courses Fact Sheet.
