Feral Animals

Feral animals seriously impact the viability of native bird and animal populations in highly urbanised environments such as the City of Canada Bay.  The small size and fragmented nature of our remnant habitat areas severely limits the ability of native species to survive and flourish in this area.

The City of Canada Bay Local Government Area supports a surprisingly diverse array of native wildlife, considering the limited amount of remnant habitat that exists in the City.  However, the long-term survival of these native birds and animals is at risk from feral animals.  Introduced species such as the European Red Fox and stray domestic cats are known to predate on native lizards, birds and mammals.  Indian Myna birds are also a major problem as they exclude native birds (and possums) from nesting in scarce tree hollows, are territorial (chasing native species out of their area) and compete with native birds for some food resources.

Managing the impacts of these feral species is very difficult in our urban environment, however Council is committed to addressing the issue through community education and limited control programs.  You can report sightings of these, and other feral species to Council’s Bushcare Coordinator on 9911 6555 or email council@canadabay.nsw.gov.au.
