Cities for Climate Protection Program

The Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Program is a campaign designed specifically for local governments by the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) and the Australian Greenhouse Office (AGO).

The purpose of the campaign is to address global climate change issues by the abatement of greenhouse gas emissions on a local level. The CCP Program involves five strategic milestones in which participating Councils agree to complete by the year 2010.

The City of Canada Bay Council has successfully completed all five Milestones in the program and is proudly the first Council in New South Wales to do so.  The Milestones process in the CCP Process is:

Milestone 1

Community and Corporate Greenhouse Gas Emission Analysis and 2010 'Business as Usual' Forecast

Concord Council previously achieved Milestone 1 on 28 August 1999.  After the amalgamation of Concord and Drummoyne Councils on 1 December 2000, the inventory was revised to include the new Council jurisdiction and showed that the City of Canada Bay Community emitted 942,133 t CO2e (tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent) in 1994/1995 and this figure has been forecasted to increase to 1,155,345 tonnes in the year 2010.  The analysis is based on greenhouse gases emitted in five community sectors being residential, commercial, industrial, transportation and community waste.

The corporate sector (council's operations) emitted 4,288 t CO2e in the base year 1994/1995.  The corporate sector emission analysis comprises of six sectors in which four sectors are relevant to the City of Canada Bay Council buildings, vehicle fleet, street lighting and corporate waste.  This is forecasted to increase to 7,259 in 2010.

Milestone 2

Set Community and Corporate emissions reduction goal

The City of Canada Bay Council adopted a reduction goal of 20% below the base year emission levels (1994/1995) on 14 September 1999.

Milestone 3

Develop and Adopt a Greenhouse Local Action Plan

Concord Council adopted a Local Action Plan on 17 January 2001. In September 2001, the Local Action Plan was revised to include the extended area and therefore a new Local Action Plan was completed.  Please contact Council if you are interested in the viewing the Local Action Plan.

Milestone 4

Implement and Quantify Measures Outlined in the Local Action Plan

Milestone 4 was achieved by the City of Canada Bay Council on 22 May 2001.  Council has implemented a number of measures that will be outlined in the next section.  The greenhouse gas abatement of greenhouse gases since the commencement of the program is summarised below.

* The reduction in corporate greenhouse gas abatement is due to an estimation of recycled waste.  In the past, this has been collected separately and therefore more accurate corporate waste figures available. As of the 2005/2006 reporting period, this waste was collected in combination with the community waste.

Milestone 5

Monitor and Report on Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Continue Implementation on Reduction Measures

The City of Canada Bay Council achieved Milestone 5 on 17 September 2001 being the first Council in New South Wales to achieve this status.  Council drafted and adopted a Progress Report as part of the Milestone 5 process.  Council continues to investigate and implement new measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
