Rivendell is a rare unchanged example of a late 19th century major institutional complex, which was built in a single stage, and survives with its curtiledge intact along the Parramatta River.
A significant feature of this complex fronting the Parramatta River is the Watergate which probably is the only one to be found in Australia.
