The City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas today announced a contribution of over $10,000 to the Burrumbuttock Hay Runners thanks to support from local Rotary Clubs at Ferragosto 2018. For Ferragosto 2018, the City of Canada Bay teamed up with the Rotary Club of Drummoyne, the Rotary Club of Five Dock and Rotary Club of Sydney to raise funds for the Burrumbuttock Hay Runners, who deliver donated hay to drought affected farmers in NSW and Queensland. “Ferragosto this year was another huge success for the City of Canada Bay,” Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said. “The event was held to huge acclaim, with over 100,000 people coming to Great North Road, Five Dock to celebrate the contribution of our local Italian community to our area and this year I was additionally proud that the City of Canada Bay worked with local Rotary groups for a very important cause.” “Our friends and family in rural and regional Australia are doing it tough and it is important for them to know that their friends in the City are supporting them through these hard times.” “Our community’s generous spirit was on full display this year at Ferragosto – I am delighted to announce that over $8,800 was collected for the Ferragosto Farmers Fund on Sunday and following further contribution from Council staff, the tally stands at a whopping $10,109.05.”

The $10,109.05 will be donated to the Rotary Club of Sydney’s Drought Appeal that funds the efforts of the Burrumbuttock Hay Runners. “We were thrilled by the reaction to the appeal received at Ferragosto. It was a wonderful day and our thanks go out to the thousands of individuals who contributed,” Rotary Club of Drummoyne President Julian Day said.

Five Dock Rotary Club President Frank Alafaci also commended the attendees for their generosity, and said that the fundraising effort was a great example of local government working with community groups for a great cause.

“Raising $10,000 for this extremely important cause is no mean feat, it’s testament to the members of the public who donated but also to the volunteers from both Rotary Clubs and the Council staff who helped bring this fundraising effort to life,” Five Dock President Frank Alafaci said.
