Ferragosto exhibition marks 20 years

| 26 July 2017

The special exhibition highlights how Italian culture has been enjoyed and honoured at Ferragosto over the years, showcasing original posters, brochures and information published by the City of Canada Bay along with stunning photographs. There are also 100 digital images of performers, stalls and street scenes between 2001 and 2016 to view.

“From beautiful costumes worn by dancers, to delectable food and colourful street performers, this exhibition pays tribute to all the people in our community who have made Ferragosto a fun and successful event over the years,” City of Canada Bay Mayor Helen McCaffrey said.

“Our librarians have spent many hours sourcing and looking through images and posters to produce this wonderful exhibition as a fitting tribute to the history of this event, which started in 1998 as an initiative of Five Dock’s Main Street Committee in the Garfield Street car park and has since grown and grown.”

The exhibition can be viewed at Five Dock Library during opening hours until the end of August.

With its roots strongly grounded in the City of Canada Bay’s Italian culture and heritage, this year’s annual Ferragosto on Sunday, 20 August will feature Italian culture, entertainment and cooking with more than 120 food and merchandise stalls and spectacular dance and music performances across five different stages.

Free rides and activities, including a petting zoo, are sure to keep the children entertained. Renowed chef Massimo Mele will showcase his cooking prowess, while recording artist, Australian Idol finalist and Five Dock business owner Cosima De Vito will wow the audience with her singing. The festival runs from 10am-4pm.

ABOUT FERRAGOSTO

Ferragosto began in 1998 as an initiative of Five Dock’s Main Street Committee in the Garfield Street car park, but as it grew it moved to Great North Road. As the demand, size and cost of the event increased, so did The City of Canada Bay’s involvement. The festival now stretches for about 800 metres in length plus the side streets off Great North Road
