Your butt is no small problem: do the right thing

| 23 August 2016

“We are trialling this new ballot bin, supplied by Keep Australia Beautiful, as an interactive way to reduce litter,” Acting Mayor McCaffrey said.

The newly installed ballot bin in Rhodes Town Square asks smokers a question when they bin their butts and provides two options. The bins have clear windows, thus create a public opinion poll.

“There are a range of topics we’ll be asking, some relating to Council and others about sport, popular culture and the environment.

“This is a great initiative to get the community engaged whilst also actively encouraging people to think about what they’re doing with their cigarette butts. It will be interesting to see the results.”

Keep Australia Beautiful (KAB) and the City of Canada Bay want to remind the community - smokers or not - to do the right thing and bin their rubbish.

Keep Australia Beautiful want to highlight the impact of litter, including cigarette butts are having on our environment, particularly during Keep Australia Beautiful Week, 22-28 August.

“Litter is everyone’s problem and we all need to work together to tackle the issue,” CEO of Keep Australia Beautiful, Philip Robinson said.

The bins are being used as part of a joint initiative between City of Canada Bay and Keep Australia Beautiful. Keep Australia Beautiful Week is sponsored by the Australian Government Department of the Environment.
