'La Famiglia' sculpture unveiling in San Fele

| 29 September 2016

“The San Fele sculpture is a replica of the La Famiglia bronze sculpture that was erected in Five Dock in 2008 and marks the 30th anniversary of our sister city relationship,” Mayor McCaffrey said.

The sculpture comprises a mother, father and small child to symbolise Italian immigration to Australia, and particularly Five Dock, during the twentieth century.

Hundreds of people attended the recent unveiling in the Italian province of Potenza, including the Mayor of San Fele, Donato Sperduto and President of the Associazione Lucania in Sydney, Joe Di Giacomo.

“This project celebrates the strong historical, social and cultural links between our two cities and recognises the contributions of thousands of Italian immigrants to Australia,” Mayor McCaffrey said.

Council has financially contributed to the development of a plaque and production of a bilingual book that details the project’s history and cultural significance.
