New off leash dog park at Rhodes

| 09 March 2016

The City of Canada Bay has introduced new off-leash dog parks in Rhodes, providing an opportunity for pets and their owners to take advantage of open space, says Mayor Angelo Tsirekas.

“We recognise the need to provide dog-friendly outdoor spaces, especially in higher density areas such as Rhodes,” he said.

“Outdoor off-leash spaces benefits dogs and owners alike as it offers a chance to exercise and also brings owners together to meet others, especially in newer communities such as Rhodes.”

Last year, Council trialled an off-leash area at McIlwaine Park on Concord Road, which worked well and will now become a permanent off-leash area before 9am and after 5pm.

The second trial location was Foreshore Park, Shoreline Drive at Rhodes which did not work as well due to the proximity to the water.  As an alternative, Mill Park at Rhodes was identified as a better location and this will now be trialled in coming months.

“Dogs are now welcome to enjoy off-leash time in Rhodes and there will be new signage, information and infrastructure such as dog bag dispensers installed at the parks,” Mayor Tsirekas said.

The City of Canada Bay encourages dog owners to take advantage of the new open spaces but also reminds them to be responsible about cleaning up after their pets.
