Walking Bus at Victoria Avenue School

| 09 March 2016

A new “walking bus” initiated by the City of Canada Bay at the Victoria Avenue Public School in Concord West, will offer a range of benefits to school children, including promoting exercise, learning new skills and understanding road rules says Mayor Angelo Tsirekas.

“This is a great initiative that not only encourages outdoor activity but also provides a safe and secure way for children to get to school,” he said.

“This initiative has come about as the result of collaboration between the school community, Council, local businesses and volunteers, including Concord Rotary.”

The program offers a safe and convenient way for children to travel to school, improves their health and wellbeing and offers an opportunity to learn about road safety.

It was trialled at the school in the first few weeks of this year and was such as success that the program has now been initiated on a regular basis.

“The walking school bus also encourages students to build positive friendships and allows parents to volunteer and give back to the school community,” Mayor Tsirekas said.

“Importantly, the program also reduces congestion around the school and also contributes to the environment by reducing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
