New artwork lights up the sky at Rhodes

‘Re-emergence’ has been created by artist Mark McClelland and forms part of the entry space and foyer of the new Monaco Apartments on Shoreline Drive at Rhodes.

“This artwork is testament to the collaboration and vision the developers Bridgehill Projects, architects SJB, the builder Westbourne Constructions and is a striking new addition to the area,” Mayor Tsirekas said.

“We were pleased to work with everyone to provide ideas and local artist and sculptor, Mark McClelland, led a great team from Artmap Studio, to create the artwork.”

Mark used the Parramatta River and the emergence of Rhodes as a new community as a theme for the artwork.  He also drew on the Grey Mangroves, which traditionally lined the River along the Rhodes Peninsula, as his inspiration.  These mangroves were damaged when the area was predominantly industrial but have re-emerged as the area has been remediated.

“The canopies of the mangroves form distinctive patterns of light and shade and create a sense of shelter which I have drawn on to develop the canopy above the entrance to the building,” he said.

“I have also re-created the root structure of mangroves and trees in the copper works that are inside and out the glass entrance.

“I am thrilled with the result which complements the entry space and foyer and helps the buildings stand apart.”

The City of Canada Bay worked closely with the developers, architects and builders to develop ideas for the artwork.

“As the Rhodes community continues to grow, it is great to see the creativity and inspiration in the developments and also other public art.  It really sets this community apart,” Mayor Tsirekas said.

The project resulted from a collaboration between developer Bridgehill Projects, architects SJB, and builder Westbourne Construction, with input from the City of Canada Bay.
