Nominate now for the 2008 Sustainability Awards

July 01, 2008

The City of Canada Bay Council's second annual Sustainability Awards are underway, with nominations now open.

Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said, "Following the success of last year, Council is excited to announce the Sustainability Awards program is on again in 2008."

"These Awards are a wonderful way to recognise the contribution of local business, community organisations and individuals in creating a more sustainable City."

A great example of this is the winner of the 2007 Environmental Business Award, Birkenhead Point Shopping Centre. Using their current redevelopment to enhance environmental commitments, strategies include a comprehensive water savings plan and a marine based environment program including regular foreshore clean ups. Energy conservation activities such as reducing the wattage of lighting are also in development and their recycling program includes paper, cardboard, light bulbs and food oil. They are also looking at ways to combat the carrier bag challenge with reusable shopping bags.

This year, the Sustainability Awards program is even bigger with the inclusion of additional awards recognising cultural contributions to the social cohesion of the City; heritage contributions; environmental work by young residents; and an award acknowledging child friendly businesses.

Awards are open to business and residents located within the City of Canada Bay Council. To nominate yourself or anyone else, complete an application form and tell us why your nominee should receive the award. Application forms are available from Council's centres and libraries, Council's website or online at www.focus4it.com.au/sustainabilityawards

Winners will be announced at the prestigious awards night to be held at Dedes Restaurant, Sydney Rowing Club on Monday, 1 September. Nominate early to win a ticket to the event.

Applications close at 4.30pm on Sunday, 20 July. Forms should be returned to Council; faxed to 9911 6550 or emailed to awards@canadabay.nsw.gov.au.
