Canada Bay celebrates World Environment Day

May 30, 2008

On World Environment Day, Thursday 5 June, City of Canada Bay Council will celebrate its part in reducing the impact of global warming through the Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Australia Program, said Mayor Angelo Tsirekas.

CCP is a ground breaking international campaign, delivered by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, that helps local governments and their communities reduce greenhouse gas emissions and their impact on the environment. In Australia alone, 13.3 million tonnes of carbon emissions have been abated since the start of this local action push in 1997.

This year’s World Environment Day slogan is Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy and CCP participants like Canada Bay Council are demonstrating that local government has a significant role to play in the challenge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

"Climate change is fast becoming the defining issue of our time and Canada Bay is playing its part in reducing our global impact," said Mayor Angelo Tsirekas.

"Canada Bay Council has implemented a number of initiatives to reduce greenhouse emissions, such as purchasing new fleet cars that run on diesel and are more energy efficient and reduce less carbon dioxide per kilometre travelled than petrol."

Canada Bay Councilis one of 230 local governments participating in Cities for Climate Protection in Australia and is part of an international network of more than 800 local governments around the world dedicated to making environmental improvements at the local level.

“Councils like City of Canada Bay realise that addressing climate change makes good economic, environmental and political sense,” said Wayne Wescott, Chief Executive Officer of ICLEI’s regional office, ICLEI Oceania.

“CCP is an example of how local government can make a difference where their combined efforts are delivering real benefits in greenhouse gas emissions reductions to Australia.”

The CCP Australia Program is a partnership between ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability – Oceania (ICLEI Oceania) and the Australian Government Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts.
