October 15, 2009

City of Canada Bay has come away with an impressive win at the United Nations endorsed International Awards for Liveable Communities.

Canada Bay has taken home two awards at the ceremony held in Pilsen, Czech Republic, with gold in the Whole City Awards, Category B (population 20,001 – 75,000) and the overall winner of the Environmentally Sensitive Practices project award.

"This win is an outstanding achievement for Council, said Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas.

"With more than 50 countries from all over the world vying for an award, bringing home two is a significant result.

"The partnership we have with our community in delivering a range of quality sustainable programs and projects for our city has been recognised at international level."

Canada Bay's win in the Environmentally Sensitive Practices category recognises the Sustainable Cities Program which involves Councillors and staff working in conjunction with our business and residential communities in addressing local environmental issues.

It also recognises Council's Future Plan 20 vision and targets for carbon neutrality, the Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan, Council's Greenhouse Gas targeted projects, the Water Savings Action Plan, waste management initiatives and environmentally sensitive initiatives.
