October 26, 2009

City of Canada Bay has been crowned the national winner of the Keep Australia Beautiful Australian Sustainable Cities Award for 2009.

"We have taken home the top award at the Keep Australia Beautiful Australian Sustainable Cities Awards", said Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas.

Last month, Canada Bay was named as a finalist of this prestigious award in recognition of Council's successful implementation of a number of initiatives aimed at reducing the City's carbon footprint while incorporating new technologies to enable Canada Bay to become an environmentally sustainable City.

On a national judging tour, Australian Sustainable Cities Judge, Sean Rooney visited the City to evaluate Canada Bay's entry and determine which state finalist will be crowned the national winner for 2009.

"This is another fantastic achievement for us all – our citizens, our business and our hard working staff – it is an outstanding result, added Mayor Angelo Tsirekas.

"We are committed to ensuring we continue to develop and implement environmental and sustainable programs and that we deliver this to our community through our FuturesPlan20."

Highlights of Canada Bay's award winning entry include Council's Water Saving Action Plan to reduce water consumption by 40%, an Energy Saving Action Plan, the Canada Bay Sustainability Awards, Green Business events and a food recycling and processing trial.

In addition to winning the overall title, Canada Bay also picked up national awards for the Dame Phyllis Frost Litter Prevention; Water Conservation and Energy Innovation categories.
