Powells Creek Renewal Project

May 13, 2008

Have your say at the Open Day at Powells Creek Reserve on Saturday, 17 May from 10am-2pm.

What is the project about?

Sydney Water is planning the renewal of Powells Creek Stormwater Channel from Pomeroy Street to Saleyards Creek, Homebush.

Powells Creek was originally a natural creek. In the 1930s, it was lined with concrete to create the channel we see today. The channel is now showing signs of age. It will need to be replaced to ensure it continues to protect people and property from flooding.

Are there opportunities to improve Powells Creek?

Yes!  This project is an opportunity for Sydney Water, the Councils and the community to work together to improve Powells Creek and its local environment.

Concrete relining would be the traditional method used to renew the Creek. Today, there are many other designs and natural materials available to replace concrete and improve the health and character of stormwater channels.

Our aim is to provide an outcome that enhances the local environment and is welcomed by the community.

What is happening now?

Consultation is the focus of this stage of the project. Before we develop any detailed designs, we would like to hear from you about the improvements that you feel we should consider.

How can I get involved?

Have your say about renewing Powells Creek:

  • Fill out the attached Survey Form and remember to include your contact details if you want to continue to be involved.
  • Come along to our Open Day and talk directly to the Project Team.

What happens next?

In the next stage of the project, Sydney Water will use the community’s feedback to develop some concept designs. We will also consider public safety, cost, environmental sensitivity, flooding and system performance and the visual appearance.

Over the coming year, keep an eye out for the next information leaflet. The designs we develop for Powells Creek will be put on display for your input. We will keep the community informed throughout the project.

What other renewal options are there?

Today’s renewals come in different forms and involve many different materials. ‘Naturalisation’ generally involves removing the concrete channel, where possible, and replacing it with natural materials such as rock and native vegetation.

Naturalisation creates a softer landscape feel and can greatly improve the Creek’s health, ecology and appearance.

Download Sydney Water's flyer below and view some renewals that have been completed in other areas of Sydney.
