Rights lost under the new State’s pro-Developer Laws
Residents in the City of Canada Bay are outraged at the prospect of losing their right to have a say over local developments under the State Government’s pro-Developer Laws.
Under the new laws, private companies will be given the power to approve residential developments with no notification to neighbours. Neighbours would also lose avenues to support or object to residential developments.
Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said the State Government’s radical overhaul to local planning laws takes control away from local communities.
“The reality is the State Government’s pro-Developer Laws take important planning decisions out of the hands of the local community.
“The first you will know about a development is when you see the bulldozers outside.
“Once you’ve lost your sunshine and your privacy, it is too late,” Mayor Tsirekas continued.
Residents in the City of Canada Bay have been able to be involved and add their input to local development decisions up to now. It is extremely important that this is able to carry on in the future.
Canada Bay Council is calling for a freeze on the implementation of the State Government's draft planning changes and for the State Government to take into account the concerns that have been raised prior to adopting any changes to planning legislation.
