Inner west councils serious about saving water and energy
City of Canada Bay and Leichhardt have been successful in joining Sydney Water in a partnership program aimed at improving water and energy efficiencies for local business.
City of Canada Bay and Leichhardt Council jointly applied for funding to increase the sustainability of inner west businesses. Their application was successful and they have received $110,000 in funding from Sydney Water to undertake a pilot partnership program to target water using businesses in their localities.
"This is an exciting sustainable project and it's fantastic that Canada Bay will be part of it," said Mayor Angelo Tsirekas.
"Working with Sydney Water on a program such as this reflects Councils commitment to achieving a sustainable and environmentally friendly City."
The Mayor of Leichhardt, Cr Jamie Parker agrees.
“This sustainability partnership is very important in helping businesses to save water and electricity, reduce waste and actually save them money in water, power and waste disposal costs.
“Like our neighbours at the City of Canada Bay, Leichhardt Council is strongly committed to improving sustainability in our community and is looking forward to working with local businesses in implementing this exciting project,” Cr Parker said.
25 businesses in Canada Bay and Leichhardt Council areas will be involved in the program and will undergo a comprehensive environmental audit of their operations.
A dedicated project officer will work with businesses to reduce their water and energy consumption.
Audits will also review waste generation and other environmental factors, and will recommend areas of business where efficiencies can be achieved and savings made.
