How to Apply
Application Guidelines
While there is no right or wrong way to format your written application, you must address each of the selection criteria set out in the advertisement and/or information package.
Selection for interviews is based on your knowledge, skill level and ability to meet the selection criteria.
The information below includes a guide to preparing your application and a summary of Council's selection process. If you are not successful, remember that the job market is competitive and it is not a personal reflection on you.
Remember - your application is your opportunity to impress the selection panel so make sure your application is smartly presented and is prepared so that it relates to the position you are applying for.
Essential information to include in your application
- A brief covering letter which outlines why you applied for the position and why you feel you are the most suitable applicant for the position.
- A statement which clearly and concisely describes how you meet each of the selection criteria. Read each criteria carefully and determine what each one is asking you. Wherever possible make sure you specifically address each of the criteria by outlining how your qualities, skills, abilities, experience & knowledge meet the requirements of the position - do not simply state that you meet the criteria. Remember - it is quality not quantity that counts.
- A resume (curriculum vitae ) containing contact information (full name, address and daytime contact number - we will be discreet in contacting you). Your resume should include a summary of your work experience including where you have worked, the position(s) held, the period of your employment and brief details of your responsibilities and the duties you performed. It should also include the names, position titles and telephone numbers of at least two professional referees (preferably your current or most recent supervisor) who could provide comments on your ability to meet the selection criteria. Remember to ask them if they will act as referees for you before you supply their details.
- Any other relevant information
Application checklist
þ Clearly state the title of the position you are applying for on your application.
þ Ensure your application contains your name and contact details.
þ Address all of the selection criteria. Avoid being long-winded or padding out your statements with irrelevant information.
þ Make sure your application is well presented (check it for typing errors and other mistakes).
þ Ensure your application is securely held together.
þ Don't attach original documents, such as references and certificates, because we cannot be held responsible for their return.
þ Lodge your application by the closing date, which appears at the bottom of each advertisement.
The selection process
Once the closing date has passed, all received applications will be assessed to see if they met the requirements for the position (as outlined in the selection criteria) and a list of candidates for interview will be determined.
Remember to prepare and plan for the interview. The position description outlines the selection criteria and so with careful preparation there should be no surprises.
All interviewees will be asked the same questions, which have been designed with the selection criteria in mind. Be prepared to provide examples of your experience. In some cases you may also be asked to present samples of your past work or to complete a structured group of exercises or tests.
It is important that you answer questions honestly and give clear and helpful examples of your previous experience. Act positively and informatively and most importantly, be enthusiastic about why you want the job. Listen carefully to the questions being put to you and query anything you do not understand.
After the interviews, the panel decides on their preferred applicant and reference checks are completed. The preferred applicant will then be sent for a pre-employment medical prior to being offered the position. This medical is at Council's expense. Once an offer has been made and accepeted, all other interviewed applicants will be informed via phone that they were unsuccessful.
