Road Safety

The City of Canada Bay Council, in partnership with the Roads and Traffic Authority, NSW (RTA) has appointed a Road Safety Officer who is responsible for the strategic development of a local road safety program with key stakeholders in the community.

School & Pedestrian Safety

There are approximately 20 schools in the City of Canada Bay Local Government Area. Council shares the concern of children near the roads and is always working towards enhancing safety around schools.  Penalties, including fines and on-the-spot licence suspensions, apply to drivers who are breaking the law.

Drink Driving

The legal blood alcohol limit for holders of Learner, P1 & P2 drivers is now zero. The legal blood alcohol limit for holders of an unrestricted drivers license remains at 0.05.
Here’s what you risk if you drink alcohol and drive:
  • Kill or injure yourself or someone else
  • Lose your license
  • Be fined up to $1100 for a first offence
  • Have a criminal record.

Pedestrians

Pedestrians deaths still account for 18% of the road toll each year in New South Wales so it’s important to cross the roads safely.

City of Canada Bay Council have painted pedestrian stencils on busy roads throughout the Local Government Area.  The purpose of this message is to encourage pedestrians to take note of traffic before crossing the road.  Council recently received RTA funding resulting in 48 new locations being applied with this message.

Learner Drivers

City of Canada Bay Council holds free learner driver workshops for learner drivers and their parents, carers or guardians holding an unrestricted drivers’ license.

These workshops provide practical advice about supervising learner drivers, information on how to complete the learner driver log book and the benefits of driving practice. For more information contact Council’s Road Safety Officer on 9911-6632.

Seat Belts/Child Restraints

As part of the Local Government Road Safety Program the City of Canada Bay Council provides complimentary checks for residents to ensure their child safety restraints are either fitted safely in their vehicle or can be fitted correctly.

Council is committed to child passenger safety and workshops are being organised to promote the selection and correct use of child restraints. For more information contact Council’s Road Safety Officer on 9911-6332.

Speeding

As part of the Local Government Road Safety Program the City of Canada Bay Council is committed to adopting enhanced countermeasures to help reduce speeds on local roads. Since the introduction of a 50 km/h urban speed limit in 1998 Council many successful initiatives have been employed. For information regarding the latest projects contact Council’s Road Safety Officer on 9911-6332.

Bicycles

The New South wales Government is committed to providing transport alternatives that:
  • Make it easier and more convenient for people to get to places where they want to go
  • Reduce the rate at which the demand for car travel increases in the future, thereby helping to improve air quality.

For bicycles to achieve the above goals, the Government has developed Action Bikes – BikePlan 2010. Action for Bikes – BikePlan 2010 describes a 4-point action plan for bicycles in NSW:
  • Improving the bike network
  • Making it safer to cycle
  • Improving personal and environmental health
  • Raising community awareness

Driver Fatigue

Driver fatigue, or tiredness, contributes to many hundreds of deaths and injuries on our roads every year. It can be just as deadly as drink driving or excessive speeding.

Fatigue is not just a problem for people taking long trips. Drivers can suffer from fatigue on short trips, too.

Stress, study, work, caring for children and broken sleep or too little sleep at night can all drain your energies. This means that you may be tired even before you start driving.
