Sew sustainable - clothing collection service slashes landfill rot

City of Canada Bay is providing a free ‘Clothing Cleanup’, an online portal that allows residents to arrange for the collection of donated clothing from their door every Thursday.

Mayor Tsirekas said the free service would ensure residents had an opportunity to dispose of their unwanted clothes and textiles in a sustainable way.

“Our residents recycle approximately 7,600 tonnes each year, which is a fantastic result, but we can do much better when it comes to extending the life cycle of clothing and textiles and preventing them from piling up in landfill,” he said.

“Many people are time poor or lack transport to dispose of their old clothes – this service solves that by collecting accepted items right from your doorstep at a pre-booked time.”

Australia is the world’s second largest consumer of new clothes, with clothing and textiles amounting to 23kg of dumped waste per person annually. In our area, clothing and textiles represent 3.5 percent of the waste stream, which amounts to approximately 665kg going to landfill every year.

Mayor Tsirekas said reusing old items was best practice, followed by recycling, which costs significantly less than sending waste to landfill.

“Items collected as part of this service will be either reused, if they are in wearable condition, or recycled so we’re effectively preventing these items from winding up in the red-lidded bin,” he said.

Accepted items include clothes, shoes, belts, handbags, accessories, towels, bedsheets and blankets.

Donated items must be in a reasonable condition – no stained, ripped or unclean clothes or shoes.

Clothing Cleanup is part of the King Cotton group, which currently collects more than 600 million kilos of clothing each year through their collection bins, which support charities such as Make A Wish Foundation, Youth off the Streets and others.
