Local Studies
The Local Studies Collection is a specialised collection of both historical and contemporary material relating to all aspects of the City of Canada Bay Local Government Area (LGA). The collection is located at the Five Dock Library at 4-12 Garfield Street, Five Dock and includes resources relating to the original Indigenous inhabitants, post European occupation, the natural and built environments as well as the contemporary life of the area. The Local Studies service also offers a selection of resources for family historians.
The collection includes:
- books;
- reports and environmental studies;
- maps and plans;
- local newspapers and newspaper clippings files;
- photographs; and
- genealogy CD-ROMs.
How to access the Local Studies collection
The Local Studies Collection is a reference collection - items are not for loan. Where multiple copies exist some publications may be available for loan from the general library collection. Appointments are recommended so that the Local Studies Librarian can give individual assistance. Some resources can be made available when the Librarian is not on duty by prior arrangement.
Who can use the Local Studies collection?
Anybody is welcome to use the collection. There is a wealth of material for students of all levels. Senior high school students completing the Senior Geography Project and history assignments will find environmental reports, newspaper clippings, historical photographs and maps. You may be interested in the heritage items in the area or wish to find out about the history of your suburb, street name or house. Family historians can use the resources provided in the collection.
