Bulk household

Bulk household collection service

Bulk household dates: 1 July 2023 to 31 December 2024

The City of Canada Bay provides two bulk household collections per year on pre-scheduled dates to each residential property. From 1 January 2025, residents will have access to at least four bulky household collections per year.

Ahead of these changes, Council has transitioned its waste calendars from a paper to an online service.

To find out your bulk household collections dates:

Residents are able to present a maximum of three cubic metres of material in total: that is 3m x 1m x 1m.

The bulk household collection service is designed only for household materials which cannot reused, repaired or collected as part of Council's regular waste, recycling, and garden organics services. All mattresses, white goods and garden organic material collected in bulk household are sent for recycling. Unfortunately, most other mixed material placed out with bulk household is sent to landfill.

Reuse, rehome and repair

Did you know Council partners with the Bower Reuse and Repair Centre to provide residents with a free collection and rehoming service?

If you have unwanted furniture or other items at home that you no longer want, you can call the Bower. The Bower can't accept all donations so they may refer you to some of the 1,000 organisations or charities within their rehoming database. These organisations repair, reuse or resell your wanted goods, keeping them out of landfill.

This service is available free of charge to residents of the City of Canada Bay. For more information, please visit the Bower Reuse and Repair Centre.

You can also visit the Bower Reuse and Repair Centre just like you would any other reuse or op-shop. The Bower sell thousands of goods from household items such as crockery and furniture to outdoor and building materials like tiles or bikes. Visit the Bower today because reuse matters.

You can also sell or give away items using online platforms like Gumtree, Freecycle or local Facebook groups.

How to present your items for bulk household collection

Materials must be placed on the kerbside nature strip in front of your property only on the weekend prior to your scheduled collection date.

Sort your items into separate piles so they can be collected by different trucks. This makes it easier for us to maximise the amount of items that are recycled.

  1. Mattresses
  2. General household items such as broken furniture, toys and household items — all loose materials must be placed in boxes or tied in bundles
  3. Garden organics — tie and bundle branches, branches over 1.5 metres will not be accepted
  4. Metals and white goods - please note all doors should be taped or removed.

Bulk household recycling 2019 – 20:

  • 3,546 mattresses
  • 265 tonnes of bundled garden organics
  • 39 tonnes of white goods.
Items not accepted for bulk household collection

These materials will be rejected and if not removed immediately will be treated as illegal dumping and can result in a fine up to $2,000:

  • Hazardous waste such as paint, gas bottles, batteries and light globes; these items can be dropped of at the Community Recycling Centre free of charge
