Having one’s portrait painted was a privilege of the rich and royal in the past. That is not the case now. Many people are delighted to see themselves painted on a canvas. However, it is not easy to find an artist who is skilled or willing to do it for free. In other words, it is still the privilege of the wealthy. Unless... you learn to paint your own!
Mabel G is enjoying her retirement learning to paint and engaging in art projects of different genres. She is neither highly skilled nor experienced but she is keen and bold. For her, contemporary portraits are fun, less challenging, and allow her to be creative. In this exhibition, Mabel shows off her portraits of her family members. She loves bright colours and uses mixed media to highlight the joy of the moments when the image of the individual is captured.
Mabel is very grateful to the staff and management of Five Dock Library for offering her the opportunity to exhibit her art. She also wishes to send a message to fellow retirees...it is never too late to learn. Art is fun and engaging. Do try!
