Ferragosto: a sustainable event

| 29 July 2016

“We have put in place a range of measures to ensure this year’s event is an environmentally-friendly celebration of Italian food and culture,” she said.

“Ferragosto is a plastic bag and polystyrene free event and community members are strongly encouraged to bring their own re-usable bags in an effort to minimise waste.”

Council encourages people to walk, cycle or use public transport to reach the festival. Bicycle parking is available off Great North Road and water stations will be accessible throughout the event for people to refill their own drink bottles for free.

City of Canada Bay uses biodiesel generators to power event stages and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and also offsets any remaining carbon footprint associated with the event via energy management company Climate Friendly.

Council is running two sustainability competitions this year. Community members who ride their bicycle or bring their own bag to Ferragosto will go in the draw to win $100 vouchers to use at either a local bike shop or the online eco-store Biome.

“We are proud to be an environmentally-friendly Council. We adopted a Sustainable Events Management policy in 2010 which requires all event packaging and utensils to be reusable and recyclable and we remain committed to this approach,” Deputy Mayor McCaffrey said.

“People can find out more about sustainable living by visiting our sustainability team at the Eco-Hub section of Council’s tent during Ferragosto.”

Ferragosto returns to Great North Road in Five Dock for its 19th year on Sunday, 21 August, 10am-4pm.

Ferragosto is brought to you by the City of Canada Bay alongside Presenting Partner, Chemist Warehouse and major sponsors Canterbury BMW, Birkenhead Point Outlet Centre, Club Five Dock RSL, Multicultural NSW, Nine Network, Fraser Motorcycles, Canada Bay Club, AMR Motors, Italianicious Magazine and Inner West Courier.
