Push for 40K speed limits in Canada Bay

At its meeting on 1 April, Council voted to put a submission to RMS for 40-kilometre speed zones in six locations in Canada Bay.

“We have identified six areas of high pedestrian activity and will be lobbying RMS to introduce changed speed limits,” he said.

“The majority of these areas are in and around shopping and business precincts, and we have also identified Rhodes West as an area that needs urgent attention.  Previously, an application to reduce speed limits has been rejected by RMS but we are re-submitting for consideration.”

Mayor Tsirekas said with the growing population in Rhodes there was a need to regulate and reduce speed limits.

“Rhodes is our fastest growing community.  While we continue to introduce initiatives to encourage car sharing, public transport and alternative forms of transport, there is still an increase in through-traffic that needs managing,” he said.

“We are undertaking speed surveys and the results from this will allow us to develop options to slow traffic, allowing the area to become self-regulating at 40-kilometeres per hour, and then present a further submission to RMS."

Four of the other locations identified by Council in North Strathfield, Concord, Birkenhead Point and Concord West satisfy RMS selection criteria for high pedestrian volumes and are eligible for 40 kilometres per hour zones.

Three of these areas are self-regulating with existing speed limits identified as being under 40-kilomtre per hour however there will be a need to introduce speed cushions at Hospital Road, Concord.
