Reducing Litter in Canada Bay

| 19 August 2014

Following Council’s award winning Stop Litter in the Bay project, the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has announced round two of NSW Council Litter Prevention Grants. The City of Canada Bay was successful in receiving two grants as part of the funding;

“Cigarette butts are the most littered item in Australia, and with 7.2 billion of them  littered each year, it’s important we do what we can to target this kind of littering”, Mayor Tsirekas said.

Following an audit last year, two sites where cigarette butt littering is a problem were identified. Concord (Majors Bay Road) and Rhodes (Town Square) will be the focus of the Bin Your Butts program, with both of these areas also having direct links to stormwater and the Parramatta River.

“We ask our community to work with us on these important programs – when you are out and about – trash your ash and bin your butts!,” Mayor Tsirekas added.
