In addition to the Citizen of the Year announcements, Mayor Tsirekas welcomed 30 new citizens from Italy, Peru, China, South Korea, the Philippines, Iran, India, Nigeria and South Africa at the Australia Day event at Cabarita Park.  He was joined by Australia Day Ambassador, long-distance swimmer Susie Maroney OAM.

“Australia Day is a chance to come together and celebrate community spirit.  Congratulations to all of our winners and to our newest citizens,” Mayor Tsirekas said.

Professor Robert Lusby has dedicated his life to medicine and the education of medical students.  His leadership as Associate Dean of Concord Medical School has propelled the Concord Hospital to become one of the most sought-after teaching hospitals.

Our Young Citizen of the Year, Rosie O’Halloran displayed her can-do spirit in setting up foundations (au) in 2010, establishing a children’s home in Uganda.  Her foundation, based in Five Dock, provides much needed health and education programs for vulnerable children.

Kathryn Zerk is a professional singer who has toured extensively throughout Britain.  As the Founder and Director of Happy Voices Education, Kathryn nurtures a love of music and song in young children, teaching singing at St Mark’s Primary and holding classes at Concord Memorial Hall.

The Drummoyne U14 Girls Water Polo Team is a well-deserved winner of the Sports Citizen of the Year Award.  They hold the National, State and Sydney Club Championship titles, scoring an astounding 437 goals with only 58 scored against them.
