Drummoyne Meals on Wheels teams up with Stitching Hearts

City of Canada Bay Mayor, Angelo Tsirekas joins Drummoyne Meals on Wheels and Stitching Hearts volunteers in delivering patchwork quilts to members of the community.
“This was truly a very special delivery day and an opportunity to celebrate the work of Stitching Hearts and our dedicated Meals on Wheels volunteers,” Mayor Tsirekas said.
“It shows just how important these deliveries are to our Meals on Wheels clients as we come into the winter months.”
Stitching Hearts Charity Group is a group of local people, sponsored by the City of Canada Bay, who make patchwork quilts for donation. On Friday, 10 May they delivered 31 quilts for distribution to Drummoyne Meals on Wheels with some representatives participating in the delivery of the quilts alongside usual meal deliveries.
Ms Marie Waldie, a Drummoyne Meals on Wheels client for nearly two years who receives deliveries five times a week, got a special visit on the day when her meal and quilt were delivered by Mayor Tsirekas. Marie was referred to Drummoyne Meals on Wheels by a local doctor who encouraged her to use the service.
“It was a pleasure to meet Marie. From talking to her it became clear how important Stitching Hearts and Drummoyne Meals on Wheels are to some people in our community,” added Mayor Tsirekas.
“I would like to thank all the volunteers for their hard work in creating a much needed service.”
Drummoyne Meals on Wheels is managed by City of Canada Bay and receives funding through the combined Commonwealth/State Home & Community Care (HACC) program. HACC services are designed to work together so frail aged people or those with a disability can remain in their own home.
Drummoyne Meals on Wheels delivers over 800 chilled and frozen meals per month to clients residing in Five Dock, Drummoyne, Rodd Point, Russell Lea, Wareemba, Chiswick, Abbotsford and Canada Bay. They have a dedicated pool of volunteers who help out with meal deliveries and meal packing. They are always interested in talking to people who would like to volunteer. Anyone interested in doing so can contact their office on 9745 6260 or City of Canada Bay Council on 9911 6555.
