Putting my bins out

Houses and townhouses

If you live in a house or townhouse, follow these guidelines to ensure your bin is emptied:

  • Ensure your bin does not weigh more than 70kg
  • Ensure your bin is not overfull or overflowing - the bin lid must be closed
  • Place items loosely in the bin so that they fall out when emptied - avoid jamming items into your bin
  • Place your bins out on the kerb the night before collection
  • Place bins one metre apart
  • Avoid placing bins near obstacles including awnings, poles, trees and overhead power lines
  • The wheels and handles of the bin must face the house with the lid opening towards the road
  • All items must be contained within the bin - no excess waste will be collected.
  • Remove your bins from Council's land as soon as convenient on the same day after collection and store the bins within your property boundary between collections.
Units

If you live in a complex with a common bin area that is MORE than 15 metres from the property boundary, you will need to place these bins out on the kerbside for collection. To discuss an alternative placement of the bins for collection contact Council on 9911 6555 or by emailing council@canadabay.nsw.gov.au.

If you live in a unit complex where your bins are shared with other households and your bins are stored LESS than 15 metres from the property boundary, your building might be eligible for a wheel out wheel back service. Wheel out wheel back service means your bins will be collected, emptied and returned to the property by Council's waste contractor contact Council on 9911 6555 or by emailing council@canadabay.nsw.gov.au to organise this service.

When presenting your bins, please remember:

  • Ensure your bin does not weigh more than 70kg
  • Ensure your bin is not overfull or overflowing - the bin lid must be closed
  • Place items loosely in the wheelie bin so that they fall out when emptied - avoid jamming items into your bin
  • If you are placing your bins on the kerbside, please see the notes on the placement of bins in the 'Houses and Townhouses' section above.
Commercial properties

If you are presenting bins at a commercial property, please see the notes on the placement of bins in the 'Houses and Townhouses' section above.

Please also note that bins must be placed at the front of the premises for collection, unless prior arrangements have been made directly with Council's waste contractor via the Waste Hotline on 1300 551 659.

Reasons why your bin might not have been emptied

One of the main reasons your bin may not have been collected is because the contents have been contaminated by unacceptable materials.

If your recycling or garden organics bins are contaminated, your bin may not be collected and may have a warning sticker placed on it to alert you to the contamination. You will need to remove the non-recyclable items and call the Waste Hotline on 1300 551 659 to have your bin collected.

Other reasons your bin may not have been emptied include:

  • It was too heavy, overfull or overflowing
  • It was not placed out in time for collection
  • The bin was not placed correctly e.g. it is facing the wrong way
  • The bin was located near an obstruction such as trees, telephone poles or overhead power lines.

Please note: bins are the property of the City of Canada Bay however the customer is responsible for the general cleanliness of the bin. Any damaged or stolen bins should be reported to the Waste Hotline on 1300 551 659 for Council's waste contractor to repair or replace as necessary.
