Men's Shed

City of Canada Bay Men's Shed

City of Canada Bay Men’s Shed (Harry's Shed or the Shed) opened in August 2013 as a place for a diverse group of men and women to socialise, participate in Shed activities and undertake personal projects. The Shed is equipped with hand tools, power tools, wood-turning lathes and welding gear, and is a fantastic place to work on local community and other projects in a relaxed and creative environment – no experience necessary! Members join the Shed to:

  • Pursue hobbies, pastimes and interests
  • Learn new skills, and practise and pass on old skills
  • Learn about their own and other people’s health and wellbeing
  • By their efforts, contribute to their families, friends, the Shed and the community.
  • A workshop where you can work on your own project or do something to help the Shed?
  • A way to contribute to community projects so that you can keep using those skills that took a lifetime to master?
  • Mates who will help you learn their skills so you can make your project?
  • A social activity where you can just have a bit of fun?

Background

Council has supported local interest to develop a Men's Shed in the City of Canada Bay. The Shed is a partnership project between the City of Canada Bay and the City of Canada Bay Men's Shed Inc.

The Shed is named in honour of long-term Councillor Jeanette O'Hara and her late husband, Harry – both tireless proponents of the development of a local Men's Shed.

Men's Sheds are valuable community assets where men and women can meet and build local networks before and after retirement. The benefits of Men's Sheds are widely recognised and include:

  • Social opportunities to meet and discuss a range of subjects
  • Improved health outcomes
  • Reduced social isolation
  • Broader community benefits through the contribution made by the group.

Council is very pleased to support this initiative locally and provide a local site and funding contribution towards the program. The  Shed is also a proud member of the Australian Men's Shed Association.
