WE APOLLOGISE FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE

"In 2018, I undertook a cross-cultural residency at Red Gate Studios in Beijing, with the generous support of a Bundanon Trust Scholarship, allowing further research into the field of acoustic architecture. I developed a series of projects examining the phenomena of binary voice transference and messaging at the ancient Echo Wall, Temple of Heaven.

Inscribed Perspectives is a film about a wall—a boundary, a divider, a solid curved structure, a place to speak to another, to inscribe thoughts or the initials of a loved one secretly. These messages are now permanently carved into the body of the wall, leaving it forever scarred. This artwork is a visual representation of the venerated 50-metre wall. It is a slow, meditative walk around the curved wall, scrolling from left to right, observing the purposeful scarification of the 14th-century wall, which is now barricaded and inaccessible to the public for whispering or speaking to another. It is a silent encounter."

- Robyn Backen

Robyn Backen is an artist based in the Inner West of Sydney. Over the past two decades, her artworks have evolved from a deep intrigue into communication systems. Her recent body of work evolves from research into the acoustics of ancient whispering architecture and their unique patterns of sending and receiving. Robyn's work is not bound by medium or scale, with large public commissions contrasting against smaller sound and light works that engage responsively to physical space and place.

She has shown extensively in national and international exhibitions and has successfully completed many large public commissioned artworks. Robyn has a history of being awarded grants and residencies worldwide, including Germany, India, Scotland, and, more recently, Rejmyre, Sweden, and Beijing, China. She is a recipient of an Australia Council for the Arts Fellowship and a Senior lecturer at SCA, University of Sydney.
