The Lab Online (Term 2, 2020)

The Lab Online (Term 2, 2020)

Online

This program will run online from 4.00-5.30pm on Tuesday afternoons throughout Term 2

The Lab is a network of technology clubs for young people diagnosed with high functioning autism who enjoy working with computers. The Lab offers mentoring by technology professionals in areas such as programming, digital design and gaming. At The Learning Space (Canada Bay Libraries), we add 3D modelling and 3D printing to the mix of activities.

The Lab Network has been running a Lab Online program since 2016 and the program has won an NBN Co innovation award for innovative online technology use. The sessions use the Zoom video conference software which is easy to use and offers significant privacy options for users. The screen set up involves seeing all the participants via a web cam as well as the mentors who are able to share their screens to provide tech and game mentoring. Participants can also share their screens to share games and other activities during the sessions.

The Lab takes an unstructured approach so every session can be different. We want participants to undertake activities because it interests them, not because they have to. This approach is deliberately unlike school and is based on The Lab's experience with hundreds of young people. The Lab is designed to be a cool and accepting place to visit, hang out and learn while having fun.

For ages 10-16 years.
